So you’ve made it past the hard part—the needle—and now your tattoo is healing. Everything looks great… until it starts peeling. Suddenly your crisp new piece looks like it’s molting, and you’re wondering if you ruined it. Don’t worry—this part is totally normal, and it actually means your skin is doing exactly what it should.

Let’s talk about what’s happening, what not to do, and how to keep your tattoo looking bold and beautiful while it heals.

Why Tattoos Peel in the First Place

Peeling is your skin’s way of renewing itself. Think of it like a gentle, tattoo-specific sunburn. Your body is shedding the top layer of dead skin cells that were traumatized during the tattoo process. Underneath all that flakiness, there’s a fresh, healed layer of skin that will make your tattoo look smooth and vibrant.

The key here: don’t pick, scratch, or peel the flakes off early. If you do, you risk pulling out color or leaving a light patch. Let it come off naturally—it’ll be worth it.

My Two Recommended Healing Methods

At Tiddy Tats, I recommend one of two simple healing options that I’ve seen work best over time:

1. Tegaderm Method (Low-Maintenance Healing)

This one’s perfect for people who want to “set it and forget it.”

I’ll apply a sterile Tegaderm bandage for you before you leave.

Keep it on for up to 4 days—don’t remove it early unless it leaks or feels uncomfortable.

When it’s time to take it off, peel slowly under warm water.

Wash the tattoo gently with unscented antibacterial soap (like Dial Gold or Softsoap Antibacterial).

Pat it dry with a clean paper towel.

Apply a thin layer of Aquaphor—just enough to keep it lightly moisturized, not shiny or sticky.

Continue using Aquaphor until the tattoo is fully healed.

(Pro tip: A little goes a long way. If your tattoo feels greasy, you’re using too much.)

2. Classic Wash & Aquaphor Method

For those who prefer traditional aftercare:

Leave your bandage on for about 2 hours after the session.

Wash your tattoo gently with unscented antibacterial soap.

Pat dry—no rubbing!

Apply a thin layer of Aquaphor and repeat this process 2–3 times a day for the first week.

As your tattoo peels and itches, stick with Aquaphor—don’t switch to lotion yet.

Once your tattoo looks smooth and no longer shiny or flaky, you can move to a light unscented lotion if needed.

When the Peeling Starts

Usually around days 4–7, you’ll notice your tattoo start to flake and peel. That’s the old skin coming off. You might even see little bits of color in the flakes—that’s normal too.

Here’s what to do when that happens:

Keep washing gently with antibacterial soap once or twice a day.

Apply a very thin layer of Aquaphor after each wash.

Do not scratch, rub, or pick at peeling areas.

If it’s itchy, gently slap the area (yes, really) or apply a bit more Aquaphor for relief.

What About Sun Exposure?

Fresh tattoos and sunlight do not mix. The UV rays can fade pigment, dry out the skin, and delay healing.

If you absolutely have to be outside:

Use a mineral-based sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) on and around the area once it’s not an open wound.

Better yet—cover it up. An SPF-rated long sleeve shirt is your best friend. Look for lightweight, breathable fabric so you don’t overheat.

Trust me, a few weeks of extra care now will save you years of regret later.

The Bottom Line

Peeling is just your skin’s way of saying, “Hey, I’m healing!” It’s completely normal and temporary. Keep it clean, keep it lightly moisturized, stay out of the sun, and resist the urge to mess with it.

Your tattoo will go through an “ugly duckling” phase for a few days, but it’ll come out looking fresh, bright, and perfectly healed if you let your body do its thing.

If you ever have questions about your healing process—or something doesn’t look right—reach out. I’d rather you ask than guess.

Take care of your skin, and it’ll take care of your art. 🖤
